Beginning Foal Handling and Early Training

On the same day as registration and identification, we also take the opportunity to begin the foals’ early handling and education. This carefully planned moment allows us to introduce essential groundwork in a calm, controlled, and positive environment.

At this stage, the foals begin learning to lift their feet, wear a halter for the first time, accept gentle touch, and respond calmly to human presence. These early interactions are carried out with patience and respect, helping them develop trust, confidence, and emotional balance from an early age.

These small but meaningful lessons are part of an ongoing process that reflects our philosophy at Monte Barrão: raising Lusitanos that are not only physically correct, but also mentally prepared and well-mannered. Through thoughtful early handling, each foal is guided toward a future of harmony, partnership, and ease with the rider.

From skilled hands to confident steps.
Trust is built hand by hand, step by step.
